About G# diminished

The G# diminished chord is made up of G# (root), B (minor third) and D (diminished fifth). Its interval formula is 1 – b3 – b5. It is a diminished chord: it stacks two minor thirds, sounds tense and unstable, and usually resolves to another chord.

G# diminished has no standard open shape in the CAGED system, so its 36 voicings are sorted only by difficulty and position on the neck. G# diminished is also written as Ab diminished: the same chord with the root spelled differently, and it sounds identical. The more common spelling is G# diminished.
