About G#7

The G#7 chord is made up of G# (root), B# (major third), D# (perfect fifth) and F# (minor seventh). Its interval formula is 1 – 3 – 5 – b7. The minor seventh adds a tension that asks to resolve, which is why it is the typical chord on the fifth degree of a key.

On guitar, G#7 has 4 common shapes: the G, E, D and C shapes. These are CAGED system shapes, the basis for playing the same chord anywhere on the neck. The viewer also shows 19 more voicings, from easiest to hardest. G#7 is also written as Ab7: the same chord with the root spelled differently, and it sounds identical. The more common spelling is Ab7.
