About D7

D7 is built from four notes: D (root), F# (major third), A (perfect fifth) and C (minor seventh). Its interval formula is 1 – 3 – 5 – b7. The minor seventh adds a tension that asks to resolve, which is why it is the typical chord on the fifth degree of a key.

D7 has 5 common voicings, based on the D, C, A, G and E shapes of the CAGED system. The viewer also shows 39 more voicings, from easiest to hardest.
