About Bbm7

The Bbm7 chord is made up of Bb (root), Db (minor third), F (perfect fifth) and Ab (minor seventh). In scale degrees above the root, the formula is 1 – b3 – 5 – b7. It is a minor seventh chord: it keeps the melancholy of the minor chord, but softer and closer to jazz.

On guitar, Bbm7 has 3 common shapes: the A, E and D shapes. These are CAGED system shapes, the basis for playing the same chord anywhere on the neck. There are 21 more voicings sorted by difficulty; use the viewer switches to add inversions and stretches. Bbm7 is also written as A#m7: the same chord with the root spelled differently, and it sounds identical. The more common spelling is Bbm7.
