About B7

B7 is built from four notes: B (root), D# (major third), F# (perfect fifth) and A (minor seventh). In scale degrees above the root, the formula is 1 – 3 – 5 – b7. The minor seventh adds a tension that asks to resolve, which is why it is the typical chord on the fifth degree of a key.

On guitar, B7 has 5 common shapes: the A, G, E and D shapes and the standard open fingering. These are CAGED system shapes, the basis for playing the same chord anywhere on the neck. There are 49 more voicings sorted by difficulty; use the viewer switches to add inversions and stretches.
